  Soil And Water   Spring Water
      back to text
There is a spring at Finca Bayano that is never running dry. In the rainy season, the water flow is about 100 liters (25 gallons) per minute; in the dry season, it's 10 liters (2.5 gallons) per minute. There's no reason to be afraid of any contamination since the area, where the water comes from, is not inhabited.
In 2014, we have planted 1,200 trees in the red highlighted area to be sure that there will be sufficient drinking water in the future. In 2015 and in 2016, 300 trees have been added; the same amount will be planted in 2017. Within a few years, there will be the first positive effects, when the crowns of the trees provide shade to prevent the soil from drying out and the roots will have spread wide enough to retain water.
A second spring, which provides water only in the rainy season, is located in the blue highlighted area.
1,000 trees have been planted there in 2015; 300 in 2016. More trees will be planted in the years to come. Yucas, false sunflowers and bananas have also been planted in both areas.
